Nifty Gifts for Knitters

Since I have been using my Xtensor, I have noticed that my hands do not get as achy and as tired as fast. The instructions are clear, making it easy to put together, put on and start using right away. It's lightweight, comfortable to wear, and you can do the exercises anywhere. It is a great invention at an affordable price. It would be perfect for the elderly as well.

Here is some more information about the product:

"Our hands are the most crucial part of embroidery and sewing. Whether you’re stitching, patch working, knitting, or crocheting, the muscles in your hands are constantly clinching and gripping, which can cause cramping, muscle aches and pains. Now you can safely strengthen your hands, allowing them to do more and perform better. Introducing the Xtensor, a medically-supported exercise device designed to offset the continuous gripping actions the hands go through every day. Xtensor (http://www.thextensor.com/) is a core training tool that improves range of motion in your fingers and structural stability in the wrist and elbow. By applying gentle adjustable tension specific to each finger, the Xtensor provides a natural path of motion to strengthen the muscles that open the hands. Easy-to-use, the device fits on your hand and stimulates the muscles that open the hands through the use of specifically designed finger bands that generate resistance. The Xtensor is the first device to specifically exercise the finger extensor muscles and tendons with pinpoint precision."

Bloom Putty might not seem like your average crafting accessory, but it works similarly to the Xtensor (above) in that you can exercise your hands with it. I noticed this the first day I played with the silly stuff. You can pull, twist, stretch and bend it. This is another great gift for arthritis sufferers. I love Bloom Putty and I know you will too!

-Available in 14 different scents and colors plus 6 unscented colors, so you are sure to find one (or many!) that you'll love!
-Scented with organic and natural oils, NOT artificially scented chemicals which can be absorbed into the skin or burn if rubbed into the eyes.
-Conforms to ASTM 4236
-Conforms to ASTM Standard Consumer Safety Specification on Toy Safety, F963
-Tested for lead content. Complies with 16 CFR 1303
* Since this toy can be molded into various sizes, choking hazard - small parts, not for children under 3 years old.

MORE Stylish Knitted Boots

Wendy Knit bootie in black, can be worn pulled up (shown), or folded down. Sizes 7, 8, 8.5, and 9 are still available. These boots are gorgeous.

For the more cost conscious, these Jessica Simpson knitted boots can be worn the same way, and have a nice cut out detail on the shoe. Available now in sizes 6-11.

Dressing Dark

Find this knitted dress by Alice + Olivia at She boutique.
You can add a colorful ring, or handbag for interest.
For a more understated look, omit the ripped tights,
and put on a pair of sleek, elegant, closed toed pumps.

Every lady wants to make a fashion statement. If you must dress "goth", shop here, or try to find designs similar to these, for a less expensive price. The great thing about wearing a lot of black is the fact that you can add any color to it. I love how knitwear is so popular and designed so beautifully now. You really cannot go wrong in adding a piece, such as this, to your wardrobe.

Gifts to get Started On

kpixie carries some of the most beautiful yarns I have seen on the web, and they are always having great sales from 20%-60% off, including kits. Cool feature: you can shop by garment type or yarn color if you scroll down on the bottom of their website. Click on the little boxes!

calypso lace jacket Loop-d-Loop Moss

This cardigan (i call most garments a "cardigan" if it hangs over the shoulders easily and especially if it has no buttons) is so boho grandma chic to me ;) but I really love it. It's very eye catching. It looks old fashioned but very wearable, and would be so cozy on Christmas morning, or around the fireplace. It is knit in a DK weight yarn called "Moss" (see link below the image), 85% extra fine merino wool, 15% nylon blend and is available in 9 different colors. You will find this pattern in the Loop-d-Loop pattern book by Teva Durham , Volume 2.

Stitch Diva - Endless Knitted Cardi Shawl pattern

This beautiful piece is one of the most versitile knitted cardigan/shawls you will have in your closet. The best thing about it is that it is at an easy level of knitting, which means most people will be able to accomplish this project with little to no problems at all. When I saw this I thought "...wow, I could really wear that for so many occasions."

Flannel - A Perfectly Soft Layer

What the hell is flannel and why would anyone ever want to wear it? When I hear the word "flannel," the first thing that comes to mind is a plaid flannel button down shirt from the 90s. However it is so much more than that, and is so comfortable.

"Flannel is a soft woven fabric, of various fineness. It usually doesn't have a nap, and instead gains its softness through the loosely spun yarn it is woven from. It is commonly used to make clothing, bed sheets, and sleepwear." (source)

Hermes Fall 2009 Ready to Wear collection.

The pants in this image are made of flannel. Check out this entire collection on Style.com (see the link above, under the image). There are some glorious knitted sweaters and stunning leather skirts and dresses. The colors of the leather (of course Hermes is a well known name for luxurious leather goods) are divinely earthy and look soft, supple, and flowing on the body.

A Few New Things at Lion Brand and Berroco

Great tip from my Lion Brand e-newsletter today:

  • Works for knitting or crochet: I like to use bobby pins (the straight kind) to mark my rows, my stitches, and also to put articles together. To keep track of a lot of stitches, I count out 10 stitches and place a pin and continue. Then I only have to count by 10s. - Anonymous

Access Fashion was featured on Become.com's shopping blog, Pocket Change!

Become is a really cool website, featuring the best deals on products you want to buy, right now. For example, if you click on a category, you will see various products, with comparisons of the same types of items, all laid out for you to see, easily. Ladies, Dress for the Position you Want

Although knee high boots, and open toe shoes are fashionable, and luxurious, your boss really doesn't want to see them, on you. They're pretty sexy and distracting, especially to your fellow male coworkers. If you want to be known as a sex symbol, that's is your business, but if you want to be taken seriously on all levels, cover up, even if it is just your feet. On a side note, heel height, in my opinion shouldn't matter (meaning between flat to about 5 inches should be the highest you go. If you go higher than that, then you are a brave soul, with a high tolerance for pain) and can make most women's feet and legs look better in those dress suits. Best wishes on your next job interview.

Hold it all in, beautifully, with the Sliminizer

Sliminizer shapewear assists in hiding your slight imperfections (what woman wouldn't want a little help in that department?) with strong durability the other brands just cannot offer. The fabric is tough, yet smooth, and comes in a great variety of colors to match or compliment many skin tones. These undergarments, made with Tactel, will last you for many years to come, and will be that one that you use again and again.

Here is a screen shot of the colors you can choose from, that are featured on the Sliminizer website. As you scroll over the colors, and click on them, an image appears, showing that color, on a model with almost the exact same skin tone!

"Muse Creative Group, an intimate apparel, shapewear and sleepwear manufacturer specializing in design, sourcing, production and merchandising, has launched a new shapewear brand, Sliminizer™, which is now available for purchase. The Color Match line by Sliminizer, which comes in 10 skin tone colors, runs at retail prices of $8-$28 and comes in sizes S-3XL. The purpose of Sliminizer is to provide beautiful, smoothing support."

"The Color Match system by Sliminizer is modeled after the color-based system used to create foundation make-up. Kate Liegey, owner of Muse Creative Group, came up with the idea after noticing that a lot of shapewear only comes in the colors of black, white and “nude,” which do not cater to the realistic skin tones of many women, particularly women of color."

“Fifty-five percent of the American consumer will be Hispanic by the year 2025. With the strong African American and Hispanic populations, shapewear doesn’t work in anymore in black, white and nude. Being in this industry for 25 years, I felt there was a strong need to address the varying ethnicities of women,” said Liegey."

"Liegey has created intimates for designers Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger and Nicole Miller and has also worked with celebrities like Nicky Hilton, Jessica Simpson and Tyra Banks. Now branching out with her own line, Liegey’s Sliminizer provides shapewear options for the real world."

"The Color Match system by Sliminizer includes several styles such as a strapless bra, boy shorts, cami and tank body shapers, high-waisted shape underwear, Capri pants and control briefs—all providing smoothing and shaping effects. Items from Sliminizer allow for innovation and design to re-emerge while finally delivering fashionable and affordable shapewear apparel."

Warm Fleece

Are you making any holiday gifts this year? Have you ever used fleece? I like this material because its very warm, and you usually only need to wear that layer with maybe one shirt underneath.

Fleece is made up of napped synthetic fibers. Your regular fleece that you can buy at almost any store, is actually known as polar fleece.

Even though some fleece is very cheap feeling (think the snuggie..you know that thing with the armholes, that acts like a blanket?), you can find some very nice, non synthetic fleece at shops like BlueFly.com, and Nordstrom.

Handcrafted Chairs by Melanie Porter

Have you ever wanted to work directly with a high fashion designer to create your very own one of a kind piece of furniture?

After 10 years working as a knitwear designer for a number of international fashion brands, including Burberry and Pure Collection, Melanie Porter has turned her expertise to furniture, creating one-off contemporary designs from chairs sourced from auctions and markets across the UK. Melanie undertakes the entire process herself and everything, from the restoration and upholstering to the felted woollen panels and individual, crocheted buttons, is done by hand. The result of this incredibly labour-intensive process is a stunning and unique, but hard wearing, work of art, destined to be a future family heirloom.

“Although I loved my job in fashion, I really missed the hands-on creativity of actually making something,” explains Melanie. “I also wanted to learn upholstery – it’s something that has intrigued me since I was a child and would watch my grandfather repairing chairs. I am actually still using the tools that I inherited from him.”

Each project starts with the chair itself – anything from an antique Victorian nursing chair, to a 1970s Egg chair – which is painstakingly stripped back to the frame, before being restored and reupholstered using traditional techniques. This blank canvas is then covered with a series of hand-knitted, felted panels, especially created for each chair.

“To a certain extent, I let the chair lead the design and knit structure,” says Melanie. “I’ll sketch a rough idea but it’s quite an organic process and so I allow myself the freedom to change things as I go along.”Melanie also takes on bespoke commissions and, in this instance, the process is a bit different. “Sometimes a customer has a chair they want me to reupholster, sometimes they’ll ask me to source a frame. Then I’ll talk to them about what they’re looking for in terms of colours and designs, and show them sketches and swatches before I start work.”

"Drift" cardigan pattern, knit with Vintage yarn. Vintage yarn is an acrylic, wool, nylon blend. You can either view the pattern online, or download it as a .pdf file. I like the colors "Fennel" and "Sloe Berry".

"Tarte" tank knitted in Mica yarn, which is a cotton, silk, nylon, linen blend. This yarn is sturdy and has a nice sheen to it for added dimension. I like the colors Vivianite and Abalone, in this particular yarn.

Please note that these patterns are not intended for beginner knitters. They are both at the intermediate level.

Beautiful Knitted Details on High Heels

Restricted Dynamic Woven Slingback Platform available in sizes 5 - 8, and in two colors. They remind me of the high fashion label Missoni, and can be considered a knockoff, by some. I am not a fan of stacked wood grain heels, but I adore the wood grain heel and platform design on this particular shoe. These shoes are really one of a kind, and are extremely hard to find. The knitted design is almost never available on most websites. Believe me, I have looked. I actually found these first, and then found the high fashion version.

Here is the Missoni designer version, which is also stunning. However, I personally prefer the previous because it looks a little more feminine and delicate.

Here is the same design in a pump, which I would love to own. I do like the sculptural heel. This is a very modern shoe. Find the designer shoes at Zappos Couture.
